Sitting on the slopes of Mount Elgon in Eastern Uganda, Sipi is home to three spectacular waterfalls, the tallest dropping approximately 100 metres down a dramatic cliff. Add beautiful hiking trails, Arabica coffee farms and some seriously underrated views, and you can see why Uganda has a funny way of reminding you that paradise isn't always a plane ticket away.
The popular guided hike connects all three falls and typically takes three to four hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop for pictures. Along the way, expect coffee plantations, village paths, beautiful viewpoints, and a few steep sections that might expose your relationship with exercise. Whether you want adventure, a quiet weekend away, or simply an excuse to escape the usual routine, there is more to do here than take pictures of waterfalls.
Abseiling. Ever wondered what it is like to descend a cliff beside a massive waterfall? Sipi offers abseiling beside its main waterfall, and it is easily one of the most exciting activities in the area. Personally, I would leave the screaming to the waterfalls, but no promises. Book with an experienced operator using proper safety equipment.
Coffee tours, from farm to cup. The Mount Elgon region is famous for its Arabica coffee, and local farmers offer tours where you learn how coffee is grown, processed, roasted and brewed. You might even get to prepare your own cup. Trust me, coffee tastes a little different when you have seen the work behind it.
Sunset viewpoints. After a day of hiking, find a good viewpoint overlooking the plains. The evening light over the hills is something special. No complicated itinerary and no rushing, just beautiful scenery and a good reason to put your phone down.
Caves and local communities. There is more to Sipi than the famous waterfalls. Guided walks can take you to caves around the falls and through nearby communities, where you can learn about local traditions, farming and everyday life. These are the experiences that give a destination its character.
Mount Elgon. For serious hikers, nearby Mount Elgon National Park offers forest walks, birdwatching and longer mountain treks. The national park is a separate attraction from Sipi Falls, so plan for additional time, guides and park fees where applicable.
Where to stay. Sipi has accommodation for different budgets, whether you are travelling as a couple, with friends or on your own. Sipi Heritage Lodge (formerly Sipi River Lodge) suits travellers who want comfort, beautiful gardens, cosy cottages and a peaceful atmosphere. Rafiki Lodge Sipi sits along the escarpment with spectacular views of the valley and waterfalls, and has different room types for couples, families and groups. Lacam Lodge is the more rustic, adventure-focused choice, with a location near the main waterfall and dramatic cliffside views. Sipi Backpackers is an option to explore if you are on a tighter budget and want a simple base for outdoor adventures. One piece of advice: ask whether your room actually faces the waterfall before booking. A lodge being near the falls does not automatically mean you will wake up looking at them.
Food. After several hours of hiking, food stops being a suggestion and becomes a priority. Many lodges serve meals, and Endiro Coffee at Lacam Lodge is worth checking out for coffee or a meal with scenic views. While you are in the region, try some locally prepared food. Ask your host or guide what is available rather than sticking to the same meals you could have back in Kampala. You are travelling, so let your taste buds participate.
A weekend in Sipi.
Day 1, arrival and unwinding: take the scenic drive, check into your lodge, enjoy a good meal and catch the sunset if you arrive early enough.
Day 2, adventure day: start with the three-waterfall hike, have lunch, then choose between a coffee tour, abseiling, or simply relaxing at your lodge.
Day 3, one last look: enjoy a slow breakfast, squeeze in a short community walk or viewpoint visit, and begin the journey home.
Before you go. Carry comfortable hiking shoes, a rain jacket and something warm for the evenings. Bring some cash for local guides, activities and smaller establishments. Book accommodation ahead, especially for weekends and holidays. Agree on activity prices and what is included before setting off. And do not try to squeeze every experience into one afternoon.
December to February and June to August are relatively dry and generally easier for hiking. The wetter months bring lush scenery and stronger waterfalls, but muddier trails.
Sipi Falls is in Kapchorwa District, approximately five to six hours by road from Kampala. The common route goes through Jinja and Mbale before climbing into the Mount Elgon highlands. If you are using public transport, travel to Mbale first, then arrange onward transport towards Sipi.
Places to rest after your day out, grouped by budget tier.
The route from Kampala passes through Jinja and Mbale, so both make natural stops. Mount Elgon National Park is a separate attraction nearby: allow extra time, guides and park fees if you want to add it.
